Dysgeusia
"What novelty is worth that sweet monotony where everything is known and loved because it is known?” George Eliot
A grapefruit plucked Gracefully landing In the palms of my hand Leather flesh A bitter mess Rather Falling from behind Citrus pooling in the rind And as it is peeled The juice trails down Hand to elbow Drippings catching wind Before fully skinned Unnatural To rise as the credits roll Like the grapefruit on the knoll To sleep without an alarm Wake to the birds’ song From a sweet, sweet dream To taste a flesh that reflects All organic aspects Rather A forbidden fruit Another forbidden fruit With a jarring taste Plus unpleasant sounds That all seems to resign to A hand-picked composure Gives a familiar tasting citrus-closure. Is it okay to take a bite?
